Women’s Health Care:

I am passionate about supporting girls and women of all ages to be as healthy and happy as they can be.  I can provide guidance and options for all the transitions a woman faces in her life, from puberty to pregnancy and motherhood to menopause.  Whether you need help with balancing hormones, emotional support, or just help with specific symptoms or illnesses, we will find the right set of tools to get you where you want to go.  You are unique and need personalized care that is right for your body and lifestyle.

During my medical school training, I also earned a certificate in natural childbirth from the National College of Natural Medicine that requires 200+ additional hours in didactic training related to pre-natal, pregnancy, and post-natal care.  Although I am NOT currently acting as a naturopathic midwife, the training I received allows me to support women with prenatal and post-natal care.  Pre- and post-natal care are often thought of as being less important than pregnancy, but this is not true.  Preconception and prenatal care will ensure you have a healthy pregnancy and a strong baby.  Post-natal care is important for both mom and baby.  If mom is not healthy and happy, she may have a difficult time with lactation and feeding of her baby, not to mention emotional complaints.  Many women feel alone after having a baby and “suffer” through symptoms that could be avoided.  With my training in naturopathic medicine and acupuncture, I can help you through many of these complaints.

I treat most women’s health concerns and also perform routine gynecological exams (including pap smears).  Below you will find a list of common women’s health concerns I treat.

  • Menstrual irregularities: PMS, heavy menses, painful menses, irregular cycles, absence of cycles
  • Breast tenderness
  • Fibroids (breast and uterine)
  • PCOS
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Hormone balancing
  • Endocrine imbalance (adrenal dysfunction, thyroid disease)
  • Vaginitis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, headaches
  • Osteopenia/osteoporosis
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Well women exams (pelvic and clinical breast exams)

Fertility:

Optimal health is the key to fertility in both women and men.  Pre-pregnancy is the time to make sure you are as healthy as possible to support your pregnancy and deliver a happy, strong, and healthy baby. For this reason, I will work with you to optimize your health through diet, lifestyle, cleansing, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and supplementation to get your body ready for conception and pregnancy.  It’s never too early to get started.  This is a very important time in a woman’s life and every effort should be put forth to create a stable, healthy pregnancy and delivery.  I can create a preconception package that is right for you to help you create the healthiest family possible.

I also work with women and men that have a history of infertility.  Infertility can be caused by a number of factors ranging from hormonal imbalances to emotional concerns.  Through my training, I am able to help people get to the root cause of infertility and treat the underlying pattern that may have been overlooked in the past.  I am happy to work in conjunction with other medical providers.

I try to recommend non-invasive natural treatments as a first approach to infertility. But, I am trained in conventional treatments and can help you make the best choices in this realm as well. My role as your doctor is to educate you so you can make the decision that is right for your body and your family.

My approach to preconception and fertility is to treat you as an individual and create a plan that is right for you and addresses all aspects of your health.  Even seemingly unrelated symptoms can have an impact on overall health and therefore affect fertility.  We will begin by getting a complete summary of your health history.  From there, we will perform pertinent physical exams.  As needed, I will order laboratory exams that will help us get to the root of the problem. Ultimately, we will create a comprehensive plan that is right for your specific situation to support a healthy pregnancy and baby.

I can help you wherever you are on the path to start or extend your family.  Below you will find a list of support I can provide (the list is not comprehensive).

  • Optimizing health prior to conception
  • Preparation to become pregnant
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • History of miscarriage
  • History of pregnancy complications
  • Planning to begin IVF
  • Low sperm count
  • Hormonal imbalances

POST-PARTUM CARE:

Care shouldn’t end once you’ve had a healthy and happy baby.  We need to be sure that you are happy and healthy also! I can support you during this exciting (but challenging) time to get your body back into optimal shape so you can be there for your family. There are so many changes during this time – hormonal shifts, family demands, lack of sleep – that anyone could use some support.  House calls are available if you just can’t make it into the office (contact me by clicking here or emailing drshawnteyates@gmail.com to learn more).  You don’t have to do this alone; you’ve worked hard and deserve support.   I can help you with a number of complaints including hormonal fluctuations, lactation support, emotional swings, and more.
